Aft cockpit hatch
« on: September 05, 2017, 03:32:09 PM »
Aft storage hatch in the cockpit fills with water every time it rains. Is this a problem with the gasket or something else. It seems to be tight when locked down.

my theory is that the lid is warped (mine does the same).  Also the caulk on the frame of the hatch may be the culprit.  Others in our local fleet have resolved the issue by re-bedding.

OK, non of the above.  This hatch was designed to be installed in a vertical position.  It's not waterproof.  USI did build a few boats with the proper cockpit hatch.  Unfortunately there are no waterproof ones that will replace that size hatch.  My solution is buy a 4' piece of clear vinyl carpet runner material from Home Depot and cover the hatch, works great.

Good to know Don!  I was all set to re-bed mine this winter.  I'll move on to projects with more potential for success.

The old Bomar hatch in my cockpit was leaking really badly, it's about 14x31 in size.  After some research I concluded as well that this hatch was never designed to sit flat in a cockpit.  After look around I came across a Tempress 1330 hatch with has just about the same cutout dimensions as the Bomar and is designed for this type of installation.  I plan to tape the old Bomar shut for the winter and then replace the hatch with the new Tempress in the spring.
